Google Adsense – an Overview for Website Owners

Google Adsense is an offering from Google which allows website administrators to add relevent advertising to their site quickly and cheaply. There is no need for your business to market for advertisers, Google does this for you.
A quick overview of the process follows.

You have to have a Google Account. Type in www.google.com, hit enter; the page that comes back will display navigation options below the search box when you move your mouse over the page.

Click on the ‘advertising programs’ link. On the left will be the link through to adwords – this is where you can pay Google to advertise for you on other people’s websites. On the right is the link to adsense with a sign up now button. If you already have a Google account you may be able to sign straight in; if not, sign up.

Click on the ‘adsense setup’ tab; select the ‘adsense for content’ link; click the radio button next to ‘ad unit’; click the continue button.

Select an advert size; play with the colours. Continue, and skip over the next page which discusses channels. Name your advert, and hit submit and get code; You will see some text in a text box.

In wordpress, add a text widget, and paste the code into it.

Within about ten minutes, but it may take longer, your adverts will start appearing. Whilst Google is preparing things you may end up with a box with “Page cannot be displayed” on your page, but it will soon come good and you will end up with an advert like this one – easy!

Notice how the adverts reflect what is on your page.

Simple!

The Google adsense page will show you the number of clicks and how much you have earned so far.

You are paid once you exceed a threshold of approximately £60 in the UK.
